It’s about time for a new version of the world’s most popular productivity suite, and that’s just what Microsoft will be unleashing alongside Windows 8 in a few months. As such - and considering the previous 2007 and 2010 versions were called after their year of release - it makes sense that Office 15 will be called Microsoft Office 2013.
This was gleaned through a screenshot of the software, which also shows off the new logo, while other shots show purported details of the new Metro interface and layout. Though this is from the Web Apps preview version, we reckon these elements should retain a unified look throughout the Office family.
Those appalled by the dramatic ‘ribbon’ interface shift that Microsoft introduced in its Office 2007 will be pleased to see that it doesn’t look all that different this time around, meaning those who are used to previous versions should have little trouble making the transition.
We’re already liking some of the new features we can see, such as a Page Layout tab joining Home, Insert and View along the top. We’re also partial to the slightly cleaner and more mature interface, and looking forward to even greater integration between the various Office components.
However, what we’re most excited by is that there will finally be a proper office suit for tablets. No insult to the variety of perfectly serviceable solutions currently available for iOS and Android, but they usually have an annoyance here or there that makes us long for good old Windows equivalents - of which MS Office is still the king.
